What is a hair graft? Grafts and hairs explained
A graft is the unit of tissue moved during a hair transplant. It can contain one or more hair follicles, so a graft count and a hair count describe different things.
Grafts and hairs are different terms
A hair is the strand you can see. A graft describes the tissue unit taken from a donor area and placed elsewhere during transplantation. When you hear a number during a consultation, first ask what is being counted: planned grafts or individual hairs? Comparing two proposals using the same unit makes their scope easier to understand.
What does a graft count tell you?
A graft count describes only part of a plan. The areas being prioritised, the proposed approach to the front hairline and the limits of the plan also need explaining. The same number cannot be taken to mean the same appearance for two people.

Questions to take to your consultation
- Does this number refer to grafts or hairs? Is it an estimate or a confirmed plan?
- Which areas will be assessed, and how will priorities be decided?
- Who will assess the donor area?
- If the plan changes, how will the scope and cost be explained?
- Which records will be used at follow-up appointments?
